Robert U Simpson

Robert U Simpson, PhD, Professor, Department of Pharmacology, 1150 W, Medical Center Dr., 1301 MSRB III, University of Michigan Medical School, Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0632, United States.

Personal Statement

My research interests are to better understand the biochemistry and health importance of Vitamin D and to use this information to create new therapeutics. I have studied the molecular actions of the anti-proliferative effects of 1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin-D3 in cancer cells. My work also established that the vitamin D endocrine system is important for cardiovascular homeostasis. We are now elucidating the molecular actions of the vitamin D receptor to understand the processes involved in the hormones affects on heart and renin expression. I am currently President and CEO of a drug development biotech company focused on my discovery of the cardiovascular actions of vitamin D receptor agonists to clinical use.

I received a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of California-Davis and a Ph.D. in Pharmacology from the University of Wisconsitn-Madison. I have been a tenure track faculty member of the Department of Pharmacology in the University of Michigan School of Medicine since November 1982. I have trained 7 Ph.D. students and 11 Postdoctoral Students. I have served as our department’s Graduate Student Chair and served on the department’s Graduate Student Committee for many of the 28 years I have been in the department. I focus my research on the vitamin D endocrine system and my teaching is focused on endocrine pharmacology. I have been a member of the Universities’ Rackham School of Graduate Studies Fellowship Committee and the Pharmaceutical Sciences Training Grant parent committee.
